What the Side Wheel Really Does
Osmo Mobile 6 has a physical side wheel designed for two camera tasks:
- Zoom control
- Manual focus control
By default, the wheel controls zoom. A single press switches the wheel between Zoom and Focus, and rotating the wheel then adjusts the selected function.
This sounds simple, but the “feel” you get depends on three things:
- Whether you’re inside DJI Mimo’s camera view (recommended for consistent wheel behavior)
- Whether your Android phone supports the specific camera control
- Whether you’re using optical zoom or digital zoom
Quick Start: Get the Wheel Working in Under a Minute
1. Connect OM6 to Your Android Phone
- Power on OM6 and enable Bluetooth on your phone.
- Open DJI Mimo and connect to the device.
2. Enter DJI Mimo’s Camera View
- The side wheel behavior is designed around DJI Mimo’s camera interface.
3. Use the Wheel for Zoom (Default)
- Rotate the side wheel to zoom in or out.
4. Switch to Focus
- Press the side wheel once to toggle from Zoom to Focus.
- Rotate the wheel to adjust focus.
DJI notes that zoom and focus effects depend on your phone camera’s capabilities.
Understanding Zoom on Phones (So Your Footage Doesn’t Look “Mushy”)

A. Optical Zoom (Best Quality)
- Happens when your phone switches to a telephoto lens.
- Image stays sharper and cleaner.
- Not all phones have a tele lens.
B. Digital Zoom (Quality Drops Fast)
- The phone crops and enlarges the image.
- Fine detail disappears and noise increases.
- Smooth zoom can still look low quality if mostly digital.
Best Practice for Cinematic Zoom
- Use the wheel for gentle reframing.
- Identify lens switch “sweet spots.”
- Move physically instead of heavy digital zoom.
How to Know Whether You’re in Zoom or Focus Mode
- ZM indicates zoom mode
- MF indicates manual focus mode
Wheel Zoom Techniques That Look Professional
1. Slow-Roll Zoom
- Rotate extremely slowly for subtle framing changes.
2. Start-and-Settle Zoom
- Begin zooming, stop cleanly, hold 1–2 seconds.
3. Zoom + Pan Combo
- Combine gentle zoom with slow pan.
4. Avoid Rapid Direction Changes
- Commit to one zoom direction per shot.
